This large size (for the Xuana family) Oaxacan wood carving was carved and painted by Victor and Jesusita Xuana of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Victor is the son of Abad and Jesusita is his wife. I take a small bus called a "collectivo" to get to their town, then a tuk-tuk to get to their door. They are a farming family inspired by the animal life close to them.
If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These larger sized animal masks feature dots, dashes and colors that are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail on the face painting are signature style of all of the members of the Xuana family. This particular piece is more matte in painting style but the same meticulous attention to detail is uniquely Xuana.
