If you're not sure what a backstrap loom looks like, here's a small version of one. This one also holds a stunning weaving work of Andrea Diaz Hernandez. She is from the small pueblo of San Andres Larrainzar in the highlands of Chiapas. These particular pieces really grabbed my eye because of their vivid use of color and the interwoven Mayan symbols. The cardinal points are there--heaven, underworld and the earth in the middle, as flat as a tortilla. The warp is either a warm brown or a dark black. These are gorgeous and unique pieces. One of a kind.
