Ceramics from yesteryear
The Virgen de Guadalupe, milagros, sacred hearts and images are all artistic motifs used in Mexican folk art in every state in Mexico.
The Christmas decorations of Mexico vary by region but are always colorful and festive whether made of tin, paper, wood, textiles or clay.
"Milagro"means "miracle" in Spanish. Milagros are religious charms that are prevalent throughout Mexico and are used to request or thank God for a miracle.

I believe this medium sized retablo box or portable shrine, comes from Peru. It is constructed of a handmade and carved wooden box with doors and is painted in typical folk art motifs. The doors close nicely and open to display a painted canvas of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. The small canvas is in excellent condition and the colors are muted but not faded. It can be hung on the wall. It is not signed but looking at it closely, one can see that it was lovingly made. There are a few rough spots on the corners but otherwise in excellent condition. Closed or open, it is a stunning piece!
One of a kind.
