The Virgen de Guadalupe, milagros, sacred hearts and images are all artistic motifs used in Mexican folk art in every state in Mexico.
The Christmas decorations of Mexico vary by region but are always colorful and festive whether made of tin, paper, wood, textiles or clay.
"Milagro"means "miracle" in Spanish. Milagros are religious charms that are prevalent throughout Mexico and are used to request or thank God for a miracle.

This very beautiful decorated black rooster was carved and painted by Avelino Perez, of La Unión Tejalápan. If you are familiar with the carvings of La Unión, they are usually quite rustic and whimsical. This rooster by Avelino Perez features the dots and sophisticated color choices on the body and head are typical of Avelino's more sophisticated style. His carvings are a very collectible artwork from Oaxaca. Signed.
Watch for more of Avelino's carvings--parrots and a toucan--or stop into the Mpls store to see!
