These Mexican wooden hearts are covered in milagros surrounding an image of the Virgen de Guadalupe. This collection of hearts are painted in various colors and then decorated with milagros. Milagro means “miracle,” and these tiny religious charms are generally used to thank or request spiritual help for a specific problem. Each heart is covered with different kinds of milagros, made of pot metal and hammered onto the wood. Pot metal is a combination of lots of inexpensive metals that are melted together and then placed in a mold to shape them into the milagros. They are a silver or gold color but are not made of silver or gold.
