This bright red wooden diablito or "little devil" is carved and painted by the Santiago family in the remote village of La Union, Oaxaca. The carvings of La Union are a bit more rare than those of other Oaxaca wood-carving towns because La Union is difficult to reach. The real work of La Union is farming, so pieces are few and far between. The wood carving is the older, more rustic style that is done with a machete. The wood is copal, native to the Oaxaca area. The aniline paint colors are bright and well coordinated. The horn, staff and tail are removable for easier shipping. Whimsical. Unsigned.
