Skeletons Celebrating the Day of the Dead, Potato Paste Retablo, Peru

$ 495.00

This large sized retablo box or portable shrine, comes from Peru. It is constructed of a handmade wooden box with doors that open and close nicely and it is beautifully painted in typical Peruvian flower motifs. They look like zinnias to me. The doors open to display a scene made of potato paste. YES, potato paste. This particular scene is one of multiple skeletons dancing and having a drink to celebrate Dia de los Muertos or maybe they are just having fun on another day?  This is a craft that is found primarily in Peru, made most famous by Jimenez family. This retablo box was made by an artist from Ayucucho, Peru. It is signed on the back. Closed or open, it is a super whimsical piece and a definite conversation starter.

One of a kind.
