This long beaked bird is a Oaxacan wood carving that was carved and painted by Victor and Jesusita Xuana of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Victor is the patriarch of the family and his wife is a dynamite painter of his wood carvings. I take a small bus called a "collectivo" to get to their town, then a tuk-tuk to get to their door. They are a farming family inspired by the animal life close to them.
If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These smaller sized animal masks feature dots, dashes and colors that are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail are a signature style of all of the members of the Xuana family.
