If you're not sure what a backstrap loom looks like, here's a small version of one. This one also holds a stunning weaving work by I believe, Andrea Diaz Hernandez. She is from the small pueblo of San Andres Larrainzar in the highlands of Chiapas. I bought this piece in Oaxaca so I'm not absolutely certain of the the maker but it is very much like the work of the Diaz family. This particular piece grabbed my eye because of the vivid use of color and the interwoven Mayan symbols. The cardinal points are there--heaven, underworld and the earth in the middle, as flat as a tortilla. The warp is a warm brown. These are always gorgeous and unique pieces.

One of a kind.
