Mexican Folk Art Found Object and Sacred Heart Nicho Box
Nichos are wood or metal box-shaped reliquaries usually with an open front. They are meant to be personal devotional altars for home or workplace. They can be simple or ornate, incorporating religious images, statuettes, medals, milagros, glitter, photos and objects of significance.
These folding wooden book nichos are decoupaged on the outside with loteria images and two paintings by the French master Manet (I think). Inside the boxes, which completely close if you'd like, are two sides full of lots of found objects, milagros, tiny bottles, feathers, sacred hearts, a golden boot, dangling earrings and trimmed with white lace. This unique box was made by an artisan in Guanajuato.
One of a kind.
