This extra large size (for the Xuana family) Oaxacan wood carving was carved and painted by Flor and Abad Xuana of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Abad is the patriarch of the family and his daughter is a dynamite painter of his wood carvings. I take a small bus called a "collectivo" to get to their town, then a tuk-tuk to get to their door. They are a farming family inspired by the animal life close to them.
If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These larger sized animal masks feature dots, dashes and colors that are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail on the face painting are signature style of all of the members of the Xuana family.
