Vintage San Mateo, Guatemala Colorful Huipil
These are GORGEOUS handmade huipiles from San Mateo Ixtatán, Guatemala. The small town is located at 8,000 feet elevation so it's cold and is often covered with clouds. These heavy huipiles (one chico, one adult size) are made by first folding several layers of muslin into the shape and then the beautiful red, orange, purple, green, yellow, white and blue embroidery is sewn through the layers of fabric. It results in a heavy, warm top that is sometimes worn alone but other times has a off-white muslin blouse/shirt attached underneath. The key word is "keeping warm." I found these in Chiapas which is the closest Mexican state to Guatemala and I was thrilled to find something so beautiful and unusual. They are stunning on the wall. The pattern is on all sides of the huipil--front, back and inside. They have been worn, so the edges are slightly frayed but it does not take away from the beauty!
