These medium sized Oaxacan wood carvings are made by various members of the Xuana family of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. I take a collectivo to get to their town, then a tuk-tuk to get to their door. They are always surprised and happy to see me!
If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These medium-small animal masks feature a dots, dashes and colors that are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail on the face painting are signature style of all of the members of the Xuana family. No, I don't know what kind of animal they are--use your imagination!
One of a kind. Signed.
