Ceramics from yesteryear
The Virgen de Guadalupe, milagros, sacred hearts and images are all artistic motifs used in Mexican folk art in every state in Mexico.
The Christmas decorations of Mexico vary by region but are always colorful and festive whether made of tin, paper, wood, textiles or clay.
"Milagro"means "miracle" in Spanish. Milagros are religious charms that are prevalent throughout Mexico and are used to request or thank God for a miracle.

These tiny to medium sized gourds are painted with an organic laca or lacquer (made from insect parts), allowed to dry and then beautifully painted in Olínala, Guerrero. The skill of these artisans is so impressive. The lids fit perfectly and don't fall into the gourd (like some do) and they can be used to store things or just for looking at. The stem of the gourd sprouts out the top. A lovely, unique gift.
I find this group of gourds to be particularly well painted with teeny tiny brushes to emphasize the details in the flowers. The color combinations are very pleasing too!
