These medium-large sized (for the Xuana family) Oaxacan wood carvings are made by various members of the charming Xuana family of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. I take a small bus called a "collectivo" to get to their small town outside of Oaxaca City, then a tuk-tuk to get to their door. They are a farming family inspired by the animal life close to them.

If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, then you know they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These larger-sized animal masks feature dots, dashes and colors that are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail on the face painting is a signature style of all Xuana family members. I don't always know what kind of animals these are, so you'll have to use your imagination!

One of a kind. Signed by Flor and Abad Xuana or Ana Xuana. Flor's carving and painting is more rustic than Ana's. And I can always tell the difference in the eye shape.
