Ceramics from yesteryear
The Virgen de Guadalupe, milagros, sacred hearts and images are all artistic motifs used in Mexican folk art in every state in Mexico.
The Christmas decorations of Mexico vary by region but are always colorful and festive whether made of tin, paper, wood, textiles or clay.
"Milagro"means "miracle" in Spanish. Milagros are religious charms that are prevalent throughout Mexico and are used to request or thank God for a miracle.
This is a very unusual textile that was once used as a skirt by a woman from Michoacán. I purchased it many years ago from a woman who collected handmade textiles and it's been in my collection ever since. The deep indigo alternates with a lighter blue denim colored warp and weft. The lighter stripes are the background to beautifully rendered embroidery of animals, flowers, leaves and on the widest panel, the words "Viva Mexico" on either side of the symbolic eagle. It is a stunning piece for anyone who appreciates the old way of doing things--not by machine, but by hand with lots of love. There is fringe on one side. If it were to be used as a skirt, the piece would be wrapped around the waist and the fringe hangs down the front.
One of a kind. Rare to find in such excellent condition.
