These Mexican wood carvings of animals were carved from wood and painted by members of the Santiago family in the remote village of La Union, Oaxaca. The carvings of La Union are a little more rare than those of other Oaxaca wood carving towns because the town is difficult to reach.  The real work of La Union is farming, so pieces are few and far between. The wood carving is the older, more rustic style that is done with a machete. The wood is copal, native to the Oaxaca area. The aniline paint colors are bright and well coordinated.  Whimsical. Not signed.

They are all carved from a single piece of wood--ears, tails, antlers, tusks are not removable.
