Ceramics from yesteryear
The Virgen de Guadalupe, milagros, sacred hearts and images are all artistic motifs used in Mexican folk art in every state in Mexico.
The Christmas decorations of Mexico vary by region but are always colorful and festive whether made of tin, paper, wood, textiles or clay.
"Milagro"means "miracle" in Spanish. Milagros are religious charms that are prevalent throughout Mexico and are used to request or thank God for a miracle.

Two of these tiny, Oaxacan wood carvings are made by Flor and Abad Xuana of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Two of them, the gorgeous owl faces, were made by Victor and Jesusita Xuana. If you are familiar with the Xuana family's pieces, they are exceptionally well done both in the carving and the painting. These small animal masks feature dots, dashes and colors which are exquisitely done. The meticulous attention to detail on the face painting are signature style of the Xuana family.
