The feather art of Mexico and particularly, Michoacán, is an art that is rapidly disappearing. There are a couple of feather artists currently working but these older pieces are likely from the rapid escalation of tourist art that started in the 1940's and 50's after the completion of the Transamerican Highway. American tourism significantly increased and many people have parents, grandparents or great-grandparents who bequeathed them jewelry, pottery or feather paintings from that era. This is quirky thing to collect but I love them! Some have rough hewn frames (as the black one does) and others, more commonly, have frilly wooden carved frames that are lovingly placed around some pretty amazing feathers. The bird's body is painted onto the canvas around the feathers. Many of them have a short description by the RFW Co. about the history of Mexican feathercraft on the back of the piece.
